XI Conference Serbian archaeology between Theory and Facts “Archaeology of Death”, Belgrade 2024

Ksenija Đukić, Principal Investigator (PI) of the project, presented the FIRPANGEN project and talked about the Justinian Plague (Yersinia pestis), examining its impact on the Byzantine Empire through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates archaeological, historical, and biological evidence. By analyzing human remains from 6th–9th century burials using advanced bioanthropological and paleopathological methods, her team seeks to determine the presence and extent of the plague in the Balkans, offering new insights into early medieval disease dynamics and contributing to a deeper understanding of pandemics in human history.
